AKKESHI - Single Malt Peated Boshu - 55%

Akkeshi Distillery is located in Hokkaido, in the rural north of Japan. It was created by Keiichi Toita, president and representative director of Kenten Co. Ltd. Its story began in 2013 when the company began test-aging batches of raw spirits purchased from two existing distilleries in Japan. The construction of the distillery started in 2015; the area surrounding Akkeshi Distillery is wetlands, with a layer of peat and beneath that, soft, weak soil extending down to 50 meters beneath the Earth's surface. It is impossible to build anything on top of such soil without taking special measures. For this reason, they employed the Columbus construction method, which entails removing the soil beneath the foundations and putting in Styrofoam infill in its place. One year later, employees from Forsyths in Scotland visited and installed the pot stills and other equipment for the distillation process to begin. The team is dedicated to making whisky using the traditional distilling methods of Scotland to create a whisky similar to Islay malts. The first Malt was released in 2018.

Akkeshi Boshu is the third edition of the "24 Solar Term Series" which is inspired by the ancient Asian calendar where a year is divided into 24 solar seasons. “Boshu” is the “ninth Solar Term”, considered the best time to sow grain. This is also the time when fireflies and mantis begin to appear as shown on the label.
