Domaine Stéphane Ogier - Côte Rotie - Mon Village 2015
Domaine Stéphane Ogier is located in Ampuis, in the heart of northern Rhône, where the family has been shaping the vineyard for several generations with an almost artisanal demand. On the steep slopes of Côte Rotie, the plots are spread between schists, granites, and mica schists, offering the Syrah a terrain of expression of rare complexity. Since the establishment of an ultra-modern winery in the mid-2010s, the estate has further refined its style, gaining in winemaking precision and fruit purity. Mon Village embodies the entry point into the world of the great Côte Rotie wines of the house, capturing the spirit of the cru while remaining accessible. The 2015 vintage, sunny and of great maturity, allowed Stéphane Ogier to craft rich but perfectly controlled wines, designed for elegant aging. In this context, Côte Rotie Mon Village 2015 presents itself as a refined red, both captivating for discerning enthusiasts and immediately appealing for lovers of expressive Syrah.
Côte Rotie Mon Village 2015 comes from Syrah vines planted on the steep terraces of Côte Rotie, where the soils of schist and metamorphic rocks give the wine a mineral framework and great finesse of texture. Yields are deliberately kept low to favor aromatic concentration and depth of palate, while preserving the freshness essential for balance. The harvest is carried out exclusively by hand, in small crates, to preserve the integrity of the berries until the winery. After meticulous sorting, fermentation takes place in small-volume vats, with gentle extraction that allows obtaining ripe, precise, and soft tannins without harshness. Part of the aging then takes place in barrels, including a proportion of previously used wood, to bring complexity and patina without marking the wine with dominant woody notes. This patient work results in a Côte Rotie Mon Village 2015 with a ripe but perfectly balanced profile, where the richness of the vintage blends with the estate's slender signature.
On tasting, Côte Rotie Mon Village 2015 dresses in a deep garnet robe with purple reflections, announcing a concentrated wine still full of vitality. The nose opens on an intense bouquet of blackcurrant, ripe raspberry, and wild blackberry, complemented by notes of black olive, violet, pepper, and fine smoky touches typical of Côte Rotie Syrahs. On the palate, the attack is ample and juicy, with a luscious black fruit carried by a spicy framework that structures the whole without hardening it. The tannins are both silky and tight, highlighting the serious character of the vintage while maintaining a velvety sensation. The finish is long, fresh, marked by reminiscences of black fruits, garrigue, olive, and a subtle chocolate touch, confirming the gastronomic dimension of this wine. At the table, Côte Rotie Mon Village 2015 will ideally accompany a herb-roasted rack of lamb, a grilled rib steak, roasted pigeon, duck breast with mild spices, or game dishes in reduced sauce. It will also pair very well with stewed dishes such as beef daube, duck parmentier, or aged pressed cheeses, where its structure and depth will shine.
