Nikka Whisky Distilling Company is an iconic distillery located in Japan, founded by the legendary Masataka Taketsuru, globally recognized as the true pioneer and founding father of Japanese whisky. The son of a sake master brewer, Masataka Taketsuru deepened his knowledge in chemistry at university before refining his skills at several renowned Scottish distilleries. Returning to Japan in 1920, accompanied by his Scottish wife Rita, he first contributed to the creation of the very first Japanese whisky within the company that would later become Suntory (formerly Kotobukiya Limited). Driven by unwavering passion, he then independently launched the Yoichi distillery as well as the parent company Nikka, symbols of excellence and innovation in the world of Japanese spirits.
In addition to its famous whiskies, Nikka also owns distilleries specialized in the production of Shochu – a traditional Japanese distilled spirit made from various ingredients such as rice, barley, and sweet potato – as well as facilities dedicated to the production of cider brandy and apple wine, demonstrating the brand's diversity and expertise. Since 2001, Nikka has been part of the prestigious Asahi Breweries group, enhancing its international reach and capacity for innovation.
