Château Montus 2020
Alain Brumont is a key figure in the Southwest vineyard, renowned for having restored the Madiran appellation to its former glory. In the 1980s, he broke with the region's traditional practices to impose an ambitious vision of Tannat , a native grape variety long considered rustic and difficult. Today, Alain Brumont is at the head of nearly 300 hectares of vines and his wines are renowned worldwide for their character, longevity and precision. He owns two properties: Château Montus and Château Bouscassé .
Château Montus is located in Castenau-Rivière-Basse, in the Madiran appellation in the Southwest . Alain Brumont bought Château Montus in 1980. He produced his first vintage of Montus in 1982, and the first vintage of Cuvée Prestige in 1985, but at the time, the wines did not meet the standards of the AOC laws because the vines were too young. Château Montus benefits from a great terroir, unique in the Southwest, with a steep slope with large pebbles on fine clay from the Pyrenees. Montus has been nicknamed " the Pétrus of the Southwest " by a dozen critics for 30 years.
Montus Rouge is a blend of Tannat and Cabernet Sauvignon , with vines around 30 years old. The grapes are macerated for 3 to 6 weeks with punching down and malolactic fermentation takes place in wooden vats. The wine is aged on lees for 12 to 14 months in barrels, 60 to 80% of which are new .
