Château CALON SÉGUR 2007
Château Calon-Ségur is located in Saint-Estèphe , in the Bordeaux wine region. It is classified Third Grand Cru Classé . The name Calon-Ségur first appeared in the 18th century, when the castle belonged to Nicolas-Alexandre, Marquis de Ségur, who also owned Château Latour, Lafite and Margaux. As well as changing the name of the estate, he also placed a heart on the label of his wine, having declared: "I make wine in Lafite and Latour but my heart belongs to Calon". The Calon-Ségur vines are planted on clay-gravel soil on a single 94-hectare plot surrounded by high stone walls. The Château belonged to several owners including the Gasqueton family, who finally sold it in 2012 to Suravenir, a subsidiary of the Crédit Mutuel Arkéa group. Jean-Pierre Denis, its president, joined forces with Jean-François Moueix and his son Jean, owners of the Videlot group.
Château Calon Ségur is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot . The wine is aged for 18 to 20 months, entirely in new barrels. The 2007 vintage had an exceptionally warm and mild April, followed by a May which brought more cold and humidity. In summer, lack of sunlight has forced some growers to trim canopies to allow grapes most likely to be fully exposed to the available heat. While this undoubtedly helped, ripening was still uneven, until early September finally delivered hot, dry heat that saved the vintage.
