Francesco Rinaldi - Barolo 1961
Francesco Rinaldi e Figli is located in Alba, in Piemonte, Italy. It was founded in 1870 by Giovanni Rinaldi, and named for his youngest son Francesco after he took over sole charge of the estate from his brothers in 1922. In the 1960s, Luciano and Michele, sons of Francesco, continued the family activity making the company grow steadily. In the 1990s, Paola and Piera took over and decided it was time for a more modern approach and internationalised sales. The vineyards (some inherited and others bought later on), represent the three faces of the Barolo territory: Barolo, La Morra, Castiglione Falletto.
The Barolo is made from vineyards located in the municipalities of La Morra (crus of Rocche dell’Annunziata and Boiolo), Barolo (crus of Sarmassa and Vignane) and Castiglione Falletto (cru of Codana). The wine made from Nebbiolo was aged in large Slavonian oak barrels for approximately 3 years. The 1961 vintage for Piedmont was exceptionally good. Little information exists for the 1961 Piedmont growing season, but the quality of the wines suggests it went without much of a hitch. The wines, as a result, were rich, dense and alcoholic with a powerful fruit character. The best wines easily had the fruit, acidity, alcohol and tannin along with the sophistication and aromatic character to warrant long-term aging.
