Château SIRAN 2017
Château Siran is located in the village of Labarde, in the Margaux appellation of Bordeaux. The estate dates back to a land grant from the church to Guilhem de Siran in 1428 and has been owned by the Miailhe family since 1859. The 38-hectares vineyard has been managed since 2007 by Édouard Miailhe, 6th generation of the family. The vineyard spreads across three communes: 25 hectares in one block in the Margaux appellation, 11 hectares in Bordeaux Supérieur and 2 hectares in Haut-Médoc. The Siran vineyard is divided in 37 plots, with the oldest parcel dating back to 1920. In 2008, Édouard Miailhe concentrated his efforts on the vineyard and launched a major replanting programme. The vineyard is cultivated in sustainable agriculture with experimentation in organic farming on several plots since 2018. The use of inputs is limited to the strict minimum, with a preference for organic farming products or techniques. Marjolaine Defrance, oenologist and cellar master, directs the key phases of the vinification and aging of the wine, with Hubert de Boüard as the estate’s consultant oenologist since 2013.
Château Siran 2017 is a blend of Merlot (46%), Cabernet Sauvignon (45%) and Petit Verdot (9%). When optimal maturity is reached, the grapes are harvested by hand. The harvest is meticulously sorted before and after destemming. The extraction is gentle and aims to obtain a balance on the fruit, freshness, finesse, roundness. The batch-fermentation takes place in barrels, which means that, once it is finished, each barrel can be tasted, and the presses can be re-classified into three quality batches. Some of the best batches of free-run wine will also make their malolactic in barrels, as for the remaining volume, it undergoes malolactic fermentation in stainless steel vats. Once the malolactic fermentation is over, the wine is sulphited and will be racked later. All the batches are tasted to decide on the aging process and their integration in the different blends. The blending is decided by the whole team and its consultant oenologist. The batches will begin their aging in barrels or vats according to their potential. Siran is aged for 12 months in French oak barrels, fine grain, medium toast with 35% of new barrels. The team said that 2017 was their best vintage in 7 since 1947.
