Viu Manent - Secret Carménère 2021
Viu Manent is located in the Valle de Colchagua , in the southernmost part of the Rappel Valley in Chile . The company was founded in 1935 when Miguel Viu Garcia , a Catalan immigrant, and his two sons created Bodegas Viu in Santiago de Chile, a company dedicated to the trade and packaging of wines for the local market under the brand name "Vinos Viu". In 1966, Miguel Viu Manent dreamed of making his own wines, which came to fruition when he acquired the Hacienda San Carlos de Cunaco in Colchagua. This ancient and traditional winery had 150 hectares of old and noble pre-phylloxera French vineyards, in addition to its winery and manor house. Today, Viu Manent has 254 hectares of its own vineyards divided into plots: San Carlos, in the Santa Cruz sub-appellation, as well as La Capilla and El Olivar, both in the Peralillo sub-appellation.
The Secret range is dedicated to the little-known varieties in this region, producing aromatic and fresh wines. The name refers to the winemaker's carefully guarded secret blend that makes up 15% of each wine. Viu Manent commissioned Chilean artist Catalina Abbott to create its labels.
Carménère is made from grapes from the El Olivar vineyard, located in the Colchagua Valley. The grapes are destemmed and then put into cold pre-fermentation maceration for 3 days. The harvest is crushed and then put into stainless steel vats for alcoholic fermentation. Malolactic fermentation then took place naturally in vats and oak barrels. Part of the wine (92%) is aged in stainless steel vats and concrete vats and the rest (16%) in French oak barrels for 11 months .
